Few things drain your peace like noise coming through the walls — loud music next door, footsteps upstairs, or voices carrying into your bedroom at night. The frustrating part? Most of the "fixes" people try online do not work, because they treat the wrong problem. Let's fix that.
First, the key idea: to stop your neighbours' noise, you need soundproofing (blocking sound), not acoustic panels (which only reduce echo inside your own room). Get this right and you are already ahead of most people.
Step 1: Find how the sound is getting in
Sound leaks through the weakest points, not the solid wall. The usual suspects are gaps around the door, the space under it, window frames, shared electrical outlets, and vents. Walk the room while the noise is happening and notice where it is loudest — that is your entry point.
Step 2: Seal every gap
This is the cheapest and most effective first move. A 1 cm gap under a door lets through a shocking amount of sound. Step 4: Deal with the low-end thump
If it is bass you hear — the "thump thump" of music or a subwoofer — that is the hardest to block, because low frequencies travel furthest and pass through most easily. Corner bass traps and heavier barriers help manage this energy, which flat panels alone cannot.

People buy foam or acoustic panels expecting them to block their neighbours — and end up disappointed. Panels make your own room sound cleaner; they do not stop sound crossing a wall. For neighbour noise, always reach for soundproofing (sealing + mass) first.
